Birth Totem - Owl - November 23rd - December 21st
Birth Totem Owl is an individual whose outer personality is focused upon understanding all of life’s myriad mysteries. In nature, the Owl is known for her ability to quietly observe her prey as she sits perched atop a nearby tree limb, waiting for the opportune moment in which to strike. When the moment comes, owl will fly silently, taking the intended prey by complete surprise. Like their birth totem, individuals born under owl will fly into new situations and encounters with their eyes wide open and their ears attuned to the slight nuances and mannerisms that will reveal much to them about their new environment or companions. This knowledge may be utilized to gain better understanding and appreciation for others, or (if the owl person is operating from contrary personality), the information obtained may be used to strike down those who they may perceive as a threat.
Perhaps the greatest natural ability of birth totem owl individual is his/her ability to see the good in nearly any situation they encounter. One who is operating from a well integrated owl center, may inspire others to rise above their own indifference and succumb to the contagious enthusiasm of the owl, thereby participating in a group effort to effect positive change in the world around them. One of the greatest challenges to this particular birth totem is that these individuals have a difficult time in settling their own restless inclinations to be forever on the move, if not literally, then metaphorically speaking. So intent are they upon seeing all they can see, and experiencing everything that can possibly be squeezed into one lifetime, that they often miss the deeper sense of satisfaction that can come with setting up nest and nurturing a deeper understanding of a few select topics, rather than skimming the surface of many varied subjects and hence, gleaning little useful knowledge. When birth totem owl individual can come to the ultimate understanding of their own restless nature and quell the impulse to fly in fear of what they may find within themselves, then the higher self may be met and embraced through their newfound skill of focused concentration.

Magic and Wisdom
Owl hunts his prey at night. Not only can Owl see in the dark, it can also accurately locate and recognize any sound. This gives it a great advantage when seeking food. Owl's feathers are silent. You cannot hear an owl when it flies, but its prey definitely knows when it strikes! Owl is a symbol for wisdom, because Owl can see what others cannot. No one can deceive the Owl about what they are doing, no matter how hard they try to disguise or hide it from the Owl. - excerpts from"Medicine Cards" by Jamie Sams.
Throughout many cultures, the symbolic meaning of Owl deals with intelligence, brilliance, perspective, intuition, quick-wit, independence, wisdom, protection, mystery and power.
Owls are the silent hunters of the night and are often referred to as the 'Night Eagle'. Their downy feathers and the front-edge of their wings have a fringe, which silences their flight. Some Native Americans see the Owl as the symbol of the soul.
Taking symbolism from the Owl directly, it is a creature of the night. Nocturnal creatures are symbolic of inner-knowing, psychic ability, and intuition - so too is the Owl.
Owl is at home in the night. It has great awareness of all that is around it at all times. It has predator vision, which means it sees clearly what it looks at despite the darkness. It has the courage to follow its instincts. Owl's medicine includes seeing behind masks, silent and swift movement, keen sight, messenger of secrets and omens, shape-shifting, link between the dark, unseen world and the world of light, comfort with shadow self, and freedom. It teaches us how to embrace our personal darkness without fear. Those with Owl Totem are usually gifted with clairvoyance and clairaudience abilities.
The Owl is associated with ancient female wisdom, moon energy connections and the unknown. The Owl is the bird of magic and darkness, of prophecy and wisdom.
Owls know when to move silently and when to be still, which makes them the keepers of secrets. These solitary birds don't feel the need to proclaim their presence to anyone until the timing is right. Owl comes to us when we need to open our eyes, and study the situation at hand. If we watch and listen with our inner selves, we can figure out what is happening behind the scenes, and confront those who are trying to deceive us at the appropriate time.
An Owl Totem gives you the power to extract secrets. Meditate on the Owl and things will be revealed. Listen to its voice inside of you. You will hear not only what others are saying, but what is hidden behind their words. You can detect subtleties of voice that others cannot. People cannot deceive a person who has an Owl Totem.
Individuals with this Totem are private, complex people and don't like others to know what they are really thinking. This can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, especially in personal relationships.
In certain cultures, the symbolic meaning of Owl is associated with death, but you must understand that the Owl is not a symbol of death, per se, but rather a guardian of the after-life.
Some Native American cultures link Owls with supernatural knowledge and divination. The Pawnees view the Owl as a symbol of protection; the Ojibwa, a symbol of evil and death, as well as a symbol of very high status of spiritual leaders of their religion.
The traditional Oglala Sioux Indians (from central North America) admired the Snowy Owl, and warriors who had excelled in combat were allowed to wear a cap of Owl feathers to signify their bravery. An old-time society of the Sioux was called The Owl Lodge. This society believed that nature's forces would favor those who wore Owl feathers and, as a result, their vision would become increased. The Owl is a good example of a creature that possesses special powers not found in other animals.
Some Native American nations have strong taboos against Owls. For example, the Apaches view the Owl as the most feared of all creatures. Apaches shared the widespread fears of Owls as the embodied spirit of the dead.
Native American tribes (primarily plains' Indians) viewed the Owl as a protector against harm and their feathers were ritually worn to ward off evil spirits.
If Owl is your Totem, an incredible gift has been bestowed to you.
You may have abilities to know things that others do not know. It may be likely you have very strong intuitive abilities that can be fine-tuned. Further, you may be a strong-willed person, or have a protective side to you and are mentally sharp.
Owl sightings may be messages for you to develop your education further. On the other hand, the Owl may be trying to tell you to develop your intuition further.
Owls also show themselves as a sign of warning. You simply need to pay close attention to people around you. Owls are incredibly perceptive. Use your powers of perception around new people you may meet. Learn to trust your instincts about people.
If Owl is your Totem, thank it for its willingness to guide you through its shadowy realm to the other side of promise and joy.

Birth Totem Owl Flower Essence
This Flower Essence supports us in seeing that hardships or misfortunes do not weaken us, they makes us stronger. While we are in the midst of our distress that tests our patience and endurance, this Flower Essence helps us to remember that old saying: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."
Totem Owl Flower Essence will assist in acknowledging the darkness within. From time to time traits of them will emerge from our subconscious. We may think and feel such thoughts as: ' I am inferior ' or ' I can't make it ' or ' I am lacking '. These dark sides of ourselves are mirrored to us through other people. What we see in others is a reflection of our own selves. This Flower Essence helps us to face our own inner darkness and realize that just because there are things we don't like about ourselves, doesn't mean we have to identify ourselves as being the darkness itself. Once we can accept our own dark sides then we can understand and feel compassion for others.
