Birth Totem Owl is an individual whose outer personality is focused upon understanding all of life’s myriad mysteries. In nature, the Owl is known for her ability to quietly observe her prey as she sits perched atop a nearby tree limb, waiting for the opportune moment in which to strike. When the moment comes, owl will fly silently, taking the intended prey by complete surprise. Like their birth totem, individuals born under owl will fly into new situations and encounters with their eyes wide open and their ears attuned to the slight nuances and mannerisms that will reveal much to them about their new environment or companions. Throughout many cultures, the symbolic meaning of Owl deals with intelligence, brilliance, perspective, intuition, quick-wit, independence, wisdom, protection, mystery and power.
Owls are the silent hunters of the night and are often referred to as the 'Night Eagle'. Their downy feathers and the front-edge of their wings have a fringe, which silences their flight. Some Native Americans see the Owl as the symbol of the soul.
Taking symbolism from the Owl directly, it is a creature of the night. Nocturnal creatures are symbolic of inner-knowing, psychic ability, and intuition - so too is the Owl.
Owl is at home in the night. It has great awareness of all that is around it at all times. It has predator vision, which means it sees clearly what it looks at despite the darkness. It has the courage to follow its instincts. Owl's medicine includes seeing behind masks, silent and swift movement, keen sight, messenger of secrets and omens, shape-shifting, link between the dark, unseen world and the world of light, comfort with shadow self, and freedom. It teaches us how to embrace our personal darkness without fear. Those with Owl Totem are usually gifted with clairvoyance and clairaudience abilities.
The Owl is associated with ancient female wisdom, moon energy connections and the unknown. The Owl is the bird of magic and darkness, of prophecy and wisdom.
Owls know when to move silently and when to be still, which makes them the keepers of secrets. These solitary birds don't feel the need to proclaim their presence to anyone until the timing is right. Owl comes to us when we need to open our eyes, and study the situation at hand. Some Native American cultures link Owls with supernatural knowledge and divination. The Pawnees view the Owl as a symbol of protection; the Ojibwa, a symbol of evil and death, as well as a symbol of very high status of spiritual leaders of their religion.
The traditional Oglala Sioux Indians (from central North America) admired the Snowy Owl, and warriors who had excelled in combat were allowed to wear a cap of Owl feathers to signify their bravery. An old-time society of the Sioux was called The Owl Lodge. This society believed that nature's forces would favor those who wore Owl feathers and, as a result, their vision would become increased. The Owl is a good example of a creature that possesses special powers not found in other animals.
Some Native American nations have strong taboos against Owls. For example, the Apaches view the Owl as the most feared of all creatures. Apaches shared the widespread fears of Owls as the embodied spirit of the dead.
Native American tribes (primarily plains' Indians) viewed the Owl as a protector against harm and their feathers were ritually worn to ward off evil spirits.
